Mathematics

Mathematics

At Bishop Monkton, we are committed to establishing a mastery approach in the teaching of mathematics, in which all pupils in a year group are taught the same mathematical content at the same time and at the same pace.  In the daily maths lesson we aim to provide learning opportunities which allow investigation into mathematical situations in number, measurement, shape and space, and data handling. We have a consistent approach to written calculation methods (see calculation policy) which are designed to give children accurate and efficient methods with which to tackle more complex problems. Our focus is on developing fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Pupils are encouraged to discuss their work with each other and their teacher to ensure they develop a sound understanding of mathematical principles and acquire mathematical skills.

Children are encouraged to appreciate the relevance of mathematics to all areas of the curriculum and their environment and to apply their knowledge appropriately. We aim to produce pupils who are numerate, able to think for themselves and have a love of maths!

Calculation Policy

At Bishop Monkton, we use the White Rose calculation policy when delivering our maths curriculum.  This document gives detailed information about the equipment, representations and written calculation methods used at Bishop Monkton in each year group.

Supplementary Resources for Parents

White Rose Maths have produced a range of FREE work booklets for parents and children to use which complement the units of work taught in school. These booklets can be found on Amazon for the Kindle or downloaded below. There is one booklet for each block for Y1 to Y6.

Times Tables Rockstars

Time Tables Rockstars is a fun and challenging programme designed to help children master their times tables! When it comes to times tables, speed and accuracy are so important.  TTRS is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice which is all completed through fun games and activities.

Please contact your child’s class teacher (Y2-Y6) if you require your child’s log in details.

Further ideas for supporting your child at home

'Maths with Michael'

White Rose has produced some helpful videos for parents/carers explaining how we teach Maths at school called 'Maths with Michael'. They cover a range of areas including place value, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and algebra (Year 6 only). Click on the link below to view the videos:

The Mathematics Shed

The Mathematics Shed is designed to include resources for maths at home. Children spend a large part of their life at home with their parents and anything home can do to help children with their learning can be of great benefit. Many of the activities cannot be done in the school setting and many put maths in a real life context. We hope you find something of use here.
